Chapter 6.4: The things we knew

Screenshot-68After a few months of research and hard work, Mars had gathered a decent amount of information on vampires. The noteboard in our bedroom was covered with printed pages, post it-notes, pictures and Mars’s own handwriting. There were so many different leads that it was pretty damn hard to figure out what was true and was what not. At least, Mars had figured out a few things that were most likely true, even if it was impossible to know for sure:

  • One becomes a vampire by being bitten by another vampire (well, duh?)
  • Vampires feed on human blood (although we also knew they could feed on plasma)
  • Vampires cannot cross running water (not many sources held this information, but since no vampire has visited our island, we guessed this must be true)
  • Vampires have fangs and pale skin
  • They cannot be out in the open sun for longer periods of time

When it came to information on how to kill a vampire, it was even harder to know what was real and what was not. As far as we knew, not many vampire-killers were known and the ones who claimed they had killed one were always humiliated and mocked on the Internet. However, Mars had found three main strategies for destroying vampires:

  • Burning them
  • Staking them through the heart or mouth (with either a wooden, silver or hawthorne-oiled stake)
  • Decapitation

We knew that we, in order to get rid of the vampires, needed to find out what of this would work, and I think we both hoped it wouldn’t be decapitation. It just seemed like that one would be a bit… messy. But we also agreed that we would do what we had to.

Screenshot-76“I wonder if we could turn one if these sticks in to a stake if we sharpened one of the edges…” I said one Sunday when we had taken just a few hours off from our vampire mission to just hang out. But even when I had a break from actually working on the case, my mind was always drifting towards it.

Screenshot-77“Petite, could we please talk about something other than the vampires some time?” Mars said, clearly annoyed. “I mean, you can of course sharpen a tree stick in one end. It’s not exactly rocket science.”

“Jeez bro, you on your period or something?”

“Shut up” Mars snarled at me. “I’m just getting tired of only talking about that all the time. Could we instead talk about the terrifying fact of me meeting Shamrock’s family tonight?”

Screenshot-79“You are?” I smiled big when I heard what he said. It was really about time that the two of them made their relation official, and I was glad that they had come to that after all this time. Honestly, I didn’t quite understand why they hadn’t already.

“It will be fine, you guys love each other” I continued.

“I’m not so sure…” Mars muttered. “His parents don’t know he’s in to boys, and our parents don’t know that either. Not everyone thinks that’s cool…”

“Well, not everyone thinks vampires exists either and they’re just idiots. Love is love and it’s none of their business if you happen to be two boys or a boy and a girl. If they think otherwise, fudge them!”

Screenshot-81“I’m not convinced they’ll like me more if I tell them to to fudge off…” Mars said and smiled faintly. “No, but really… I actually really like him and I want to make a good impression.”

“Eh, you’ll be fine. Just be yourself, but with a bit less talk about vampires than usual, perhaps. You’re perfect. Everyone likes you.”

Screenshot-82“Dad, did you know that you probably did the exactly right thing when you brought us here?” I said when we had dinner on the porch that night. I had hated our island for many years, but now that I knew it had probably kept us safe for all these years, I felt really thankful.

“It felt right” dad answered. “Or what do you mean?”

“Oh, we just found out that vampires probably can’t cross running water. So we’ve actually been all safe out here. Or, at least we think so.”

“Is that so?” dad didn’t say much more but I could see that something troubled him.

“You’re not happy about it, are you? I’m trying to say thank you here, but you make it hard for me.”

Dad sighed, “You think that is hard? You know nothing about what’s hard. I left everything to get you here, your mother is locked in at a stupid treatment center because she wants to keep us safe, and I left my family and it got my niece killed. We might be safe, but it’s not enough. Nothing will be enough until they’re gone. Nothing.”

Eden didn’t say a thing, he just kept chewing nervously on his hot dog. He rarely said anything, he always managed to keep in the background (which probably wasn’t that hard in this freaky family). It annoyed me that dad got angry at me for saying thank you, and it annoyed me that he thought I didn’t know about hardship. I spent pretty much all my time on trying to overcome the threat that had haunted our family for generations, yet he had the guts to say I didn’t do a thing.

“You’re being so unfair” I said silently. I was so angry that I couldn’t even scream or make a fuss. “I do everything I can to figure out how to beat those things. I hurt from this too and I also miss mom. I don’t find anything in this easy, but I do my best. Why can’t that be enough for you?”

Screenshot-83Dad got silent and I angrily ate without looking at him. However, I could see at the corner of my eye that dad was crying.

“You’re right, that was unfair. I’m sorry” he said after a while. “I just miss her so much. I really want your mother to live here with us. And you just said that she ain’t safe where she is. That none of them are safe on the main island. Right?

“I guess so…” I mumbled.

“And your brother, is he also in danger at the main island tonight, or where is he?”

“On the main island… But hopefully not in danger at all. He’s meeting his boyfriend’s family, is all.” I said it before I thought it through, unveiled his secret with my perfect sense of speaking before thinking.

Screenshot-84“With his boyfriend?” Dad stood up and angrily pushed his chair towards the table so that the plastic legs of the chair bumped in to the table with a loud bump.

“Oh come one” I sighed. “Like it matters if it’s a boy or a girl. He’s in love, you should be happy for him. Now you’re just ridicolous.” It made me so angry to think that dad would care for such a thing. I had always thought of him like an open and accepting parent.

“I don’t fudging care whether it’s a boy or girl” dad snarled. “I only care that there’s anyone at all. Or perhaps you think it’s wise to put someone you love in that danger? The vampires don’t care about love, they only crave blood and death.”

Oh shit. I hadn’t thought about it that way and I don’t think Mars had either. We needed people in our lives that were not just our closest family, but was it really worth risking their lives for? Wasn’t that rather selfish?

Screenshot-89When Mars came home later that night he slammed the front door shut, marched in to our bedroom and slammed that door shut too. Moments later I heard him crying while his fists slammed to the walls of the room. I had never seen my brother so angry before.

“Ey, stop that!” I went up to him and put a hand on his shoulder and when I did he just collapsed in to my arms and cried.

“What happened?” I asked later, when he had calmed down enough to speak. He walked to the window and looked out over the ocean for a few moments before he turned to me slightly:

Screenshot-88“Well that was a fudging mistake. I should have known it was too good to be true. Nothing good ever happens to us. This family is fudging cursed and filled with freaks. We should just let the vampires kill us. Save the world from our presence.”

“Come on, tell me what happened instead, okay?”

Mars took a breath: “Did you know that dad kidnapped a kid before they had us?”

I nodded, they had told us the whole story when we were younger. Why mom was at the treatment center and how they had met there, so we both knew.

“Well, turns out that kid is Shamrock’s older brother, Hunter. Isn’t that convenient? You think his parents were thrilled to see me there?”

“Yea, so I guess I won’t be seeing Shamrock anymore.” Tears started rolling down Mars’s cheeks again. “That’s probably for the better anyway, our family is haunted. No one can ever be happy with us in their lives. They’ll just be in danger.”

Screenshot-90I didn’t know what to say. There was nothing I could say. History was what it was, dad had kidnapped that kid when he hallucinated and the family still hated him for it. It was unfortunate and stupid that Mars had fallen in love with their other son. But it didn’t make sense to keep them apart because of something that happened sixteen years ago. And something that Mars or Shamrock hadn’t been part of at all. They deserved to be happy, both of them. But I wondered if they would get their happy end, they sure had a mighty hill to climb first, and I couldn’t know if Shamrock was ready for that. Or Mars, for that matter.

Chapter 6.3: Hard work

Screenshot-22I took my new mission very seriously and even though I had never really worked out before in my life, I had this idea that my body would immediately cooperate and become strong and powerful. Not without working for it, of course. I spent a lot of time trying to build both muscles, endurance and speed.

Screenshot-24Let’s just say I was wrong…

I had definitely thought it would be easier. I mean, all the sports-dorks at school made it seem so easy. I was so much smarter than them, yet it was incredibly hard for me to master the physical exercise. But, I was determined to succeed, so I kept working on it.

Screenshot-53We spent pretty much all of our time outside school to focus on the vampires and how to get rid of them. Mars scavenged the Internet for every forum thread that had ever been posted about vampires, and he read theoretical texts about the origins of vampires and the different myths surrounding them. It quickly became clear that the majority of berries around the world knew very little about vampires. It also became clear that vampires’ weaknesses and strengths differed a lot depending on what text you read, or what author it was. It would be a lot of work to figure out what was true and what was wrong and I was glad that I had put Mars on that, so that I only had to come with input whenever he needed it.

Mars was a mastermind when it came to doing tables and organizing things. He had put up a noteboard in our room where we gathered the things he had read and he had some kind of system worked out where he could see what things came back in several texts and what things were rare. It didn’t make perfect sense to me, but Mars knew exactly how to read his own work.

Screenshot-52We spent so much time on working with the vampires and getting ourselves ready to face them that many other things fell behind. I just didn’t have time for much else. I even wanted to stop going to school, but dad was already furious because my grades were dropping now that I didn’t have time to do my homework. He just didn’t understand, nothing was more important than my life quest.

“This is not everything, Petite!” he said. “Unless you get your grades up, I won’t let you workout so much.”

“This is everything!” I complained, but he just wouldn’t listen. And I knew then, that I would have to find a way to balance everything.

Screenshot-55Jazzberry had also become disappointed in my priorities. I hadn’t seen him since Cashmere’s death, because I didn’t think I had time to do so.

“We never tried Insomniac. It might help you.” I read Jazz’s message quickly before I got changed for my after-school workout. I had been so wrapped up in myself and my new quest that I had completely forgotten about the new brew we were going to try. And now that he had reminded me, I smiled. He was definitely right; if Insomniac worked, I wouldn’t need to waste time on sleeping and I could manage both working out and homework. It was definitely worth a try.

Screenshot-48When I came in to Jazzberry’s shed I was filled with a warm tinglig feeling. I had missed going here. I always felt happy and exctied when I was here, and it made me a bit sad to think that I had not been here for weeks.

“Let’s try it!” Jazz smiled and it was just as if those weeks when we barely spoke in school didn’t exist. He was still my best friend and he had already forgiven me for abandoning him. I made a mental note that I shouldn’t do it again. My life needed a friend like him.

I followed him back to the cauldron and watched as he threw minced wolfbane in to a already boiling transparent mixture. It crackled and sizzled and the mixture slowly turned in to a bright red colour. It looked poisonous and I remembered how Jazzberry had told me that the flowers we just added to the brew could kill us if we used too much. It was exciting, but scary, to think about soon drinking this for the first time.

Screenshot-49“I missed you” Jazzberry suddenly said while stirring the cauldron. His eyes just barely glanced in my direction and his voice didn’t change tone at all. He said it without any sign of emotion, but I still knew he meant it. And I realized that I had missed him too. I had missed him a lot, actually.

“I’ve missed you too” I said quietly. “I’m sorry. I really am.”

We didn’t say more about it, we didn’t need to because now we both knew that we were friends for real. That awkward beginning our relation had that was based on a pink and fluffy brew, had actually turned in to something real.

Screenshot-54When I came home later that day, Mars sat by the computer as usual. I looked at him and saw that he was tired, his eyes squinted at the screen and underneath them small dark circles had started to appear. I wondered when he latest saw Shamrock, and if they also missed each other behind all this vampire deal.

“There are so many idiots out there” Mars sighed and drew his hand through his hair. He always did that when he was annoyed. “Some things I read make me think we are the stupid ones because we actually believe in the vampires and then I realize that we are right. And these people are so certain that we are the idiots. How can they be so stubborn when they know so little?” He closed the laptop with a thump and sighed loudly.

“Have you seen Shamrock lately?” I asked instead of commenting on what Mars had just said.

“We had maths today.”

“Outside of school, I mean.” They were still not open with their love and the only times I had seen them kiss and hug were at Jazzberry’s place, whenever we took the Fluff Brew.

“Nah. Hadn’t had time” Mars replied and I could hear traces of sadness in his voice.

“Then go see him. We can’t devote all our time to this.”

Screenshot-56Mars never said anything about seeing Shamrock, but a few hours later he walked out the door and left and I was pretty sure he went to see him. It was quiet in the house, dad and Eden had gone to see mom and I decided to try the Insomniac brew. The liquid bubbled inside the small bottle and it felt like my intestines did the same inside my stomach. How could it be so exciting to drink something?

Screenshot-57 Screenshot-58I took a deep breath before drinking the new brew and as soon as I had swallowed it, I felt a rush throughout my body and my brain immediately felt so… alive.

Screenshot-23I changed in to my workout clothes and did a session of about an hour. Dad came home and shouted about homework shortly thereafter and I promised to complete them before I continued my workout. While dad read Eden goodnight, I took a quick shower and ate. Even though it was late afterwards, I still felt much awake and I knew I could stay up for hours more.

Mars got home and went straight to bed, and dad went to bed too. “Don’t forget your homework” he said.

Screenshot-59I struggled with homework in the middle of the night, but when I was done I still had energy for another workout. I realized that night that the Insomniac Brew would give my days another 10 hours, which meant I would have time for both school, vampire preparations, seeing Jazzberry and homework. This was revolutionary!

Screenshot-61A few weeks later it was time for Eden’s birthday. It was strange because I really loved my little brother, but I never really spent any time with him. Perhaps it was because me and Mars were so close that Eden ended up being rather alone. Perhaps it was because he was younger. I don’t know why, but I knew very little of my brother and I found myself surprised at the fact that her would become a teenager. My little baby brother would soon go through his first love, his first heartbreak and he would gain friends who made him do both fun and stupid things. He was about to grow big.

We decided to host a little party for him, and I invited Jazzberry to come celebrate the day together with our family. I suggested that Mars invited Shamrock too, but he wasn’t ready for that.

Screenshot-62 Screenshot-63Jazzberry came and were his regular goofy self. “I know it’s not your birthday, but I brought you flowers anyway” he smiled and jokingly fluttered his eyelashes up and down. I went along with the little game and let out a surprised little scream: “Oh Jazzie, you shouldn’t have! Oh, they’re beautiful!” And then we both laughed. I was glad that he was back in my everyday life.

Screenshot-65When it was time for Eden to blow the candles of the cake we all gathered and cheered for him. It was nice when we could have gatherings like this when no one thought about vampires, even if Lavender was unable to make it due to anxiety after what happened to Cashmere. So I guess that worry was still there, but it was overshadowed by joy and happiness for the birthday celebration.

Screenshot-66It was strange to see my little brother all grown up. I could definitely see him breaking a few hearts in the coming years, and I actually looked forward to seeing it. It was exciting with birthdays and time passing. I liked thinking about our family moving forward, because it meant we have lived through the vampire threat. Nothing made me happier.

Chapter 6.2: Kill them all

So, this chapter features characters that went lost when my computer crashed. You can find their pictures in the Family Tree if you don’t remember them. Other than that, I can only write them in to the text without pictures, sorry.

Screenshot-30Before this day, I had never seen our entire family gathered at the same place, it was too risky considering the vampires who wanted to kill or turn us all. But today we had made an exception. Grandmother had spent her whole life trying to keep us all safe, and it was only right that we honored her by all gathering and supporting each other. It pained me to think that she was gone and that I would never again get to see her, but at the same time I was glad that she could finally let go of the pressure of keeping everyone safe. It was up to us now, me and Mars.

Screenshot-29Everyone was dressed in their regular clothes. Grandmother had never been much for dressing up or following dress-codes, so it was the only thing that felt right. Some of the family members had even left their shoes at home and came barefoot, a humble way of showing respect. When I saw Lavender barefooted my eyes teared up and I decided to leave my own shoes in the car too. None of Lavender’s children had shoes on either. I hadn’t met my cousins many times before, but Cashmere was basically a copy of grandmother Coral. Her skin had the same red color and her hair was the same light color as my own – inherited from generations earlier.

Screenshot-32Rhubarb arrived last, and when he did dad threw a tantrum. Many years ago, Rhubarb had taken Raindrop under his wings, doing his best to help her handle her vampirism in a similar way as Thunderbird had – only feeding on plasma and living in harmony with the ordinary berries. Dad had always thought he was crazy to sign up for the task and because of that, we had never had much contact with Rhubarb. It wasn’t worth the risk, dad had decided. Of course, Rhubarb had every right to be at the reception, it would have been awkward if he weren’t, but what upset dad was that he had brought Raindrop. A vampire at grandma’s funeral. Insane.

“Are you out of your fudging mind?!” Dad screamed when he saw them both come. “This is an insult to our mother, you crazy, selfish, rotten berry!”

Rhubarb answered calmly, probably prepared for the reaction: “She’s my family, Yew. Mom would respect that.”

“She would respect it?! She devoted her life to keeping us safe from those things.”

Screenshot-34“We don’t need to be kept safe from Raindrop. She doesn’t feed on humans.”

“You keep her the fudge away from my family, or I’ll personally rip you apart” dad growled and Lavender had to come and pull him away.

“Relax” she said. “She’ll keep away from us.”

Screenshot-40I glanced over at Raindrop, who stood at a distance from the rest of us. She almost looked normal, yet she made me shiver. The whole vampire threat had always been quite surreal to me, and even though I often thought about the pressure of mom’s predictions, I had never really understood that it was real. I had never seen a vampire before. And there she was, one of the creatures me and Mars would eventually defeat. I decided to keep an eye at her at all times, I didn’t trust her at all.

Screenshot-31We had all eaten our pizza even before Rhubarb came, so he had to sit on his own in the kitchen and eat while the rest of us hung out in Lavender’s livingroom. We spent the time by telling each other memories from grandmother and trying to not be too sad. Grandma was never really the sad type, even when things had gone completely wrong.

Dad told us about the time when grandpa got abducted by aliens and they didn’t know what had happened. According to dad, grandma wasn’t even too sad then. She was worried, of course, but never really sad. She always had a way of looking at life in a bright light. I found myself hoping, or wishing, that I had got some of that too. I already knew I had her fighting spirit, but it would be nice to get some of that positivity too.

Screenshot-41“Trust me, you are a lot like her” Lavender said and smiled towards me. “You have that same way of living in the moment as she did. I see so much of her in you.” It was the greatest compliment I could have possibly got.

It had been a perfectly fine afternoon. Toned-down and calm, just as grandma would have liked it. Everything seemed to be going just fine, but we should have known, of course, that things would change. Nothing in our family every goes just fine.

It happened so fast. No one even had the chance to react.

Screenshot-28Cashmere and Pearl were sitting on the floor, playing with their dolls. They were not really that close to each other, but somehow Pearl managed to crawl over to Cashmere and pull her doll out of her hands. Cashmere reacted by slapping Pearl in the face, who immediately started crying at the same time as she bit Cashmere in the ear. She must have bitten hard because when she let go, Cashmere’s ear was bleeding. All of this happened in the blink of a second. None of us had even begun standing up to go and separate the girls before Raindrop stood crouched over Cashmere.

Not until then did the rest of us react. I screamed, Froly screamed, Lavender screamed and Pearl cried. Raindrop looked up at the sound of our screams and she looked me straight in the eyes. Her eyes were blank and empty and from the corner of her mouth came a single drop of blood. She was gone before I could blink.

Screenshot-39Dad screamed, not out of fear but out of anger as he ran out of the room. It was impossible to make out any words, but I knew he was running towards the kitchen where Rhubarb did the dishes. It was strange how the room felt silent even though we all screamed and dad’s footsteps loudly echoed. The only one who was silent was Cashmere. Her little body laid seemingly lifeless on the floor and blood trickled to the floor from two small marks on her neck. My young and innocent little cousin had been bitten by a vampire. As the fact sunk in I felt anger rising within my body. My fists clenched themselves and my back straightened up.

Screenshot-35Screenshot-36“You said this wouldn’t happen!” Dad screamed with an anger far from anything I had ever experienced before. “You promised! This is YOUR FAULT!” Rhubarb had no time to defend himself. Dad had taken his neck in a steady grip and kicked his feet away before he even had the chance to react. “This is on you, Rhubie!”

No one even cared to try to stop them and dad gave his brother quite the beating. We heard ouchs and ows into the livingroom but no one did anything about it.

Screenshot-38“You are not a part of this family anymore” dad growled and pushed Rhubarb out through the front door. Rhubarb didn’t complain, he just limped away – beaten and bruised.

I could not believe what just had happened. Lavender had fallen to her knees on the floor next to her daughter. She held her hand on Cashmere’s chest and her eyes were filled with tears and fear. “It’s beating. Her heart, it’s beating”” Lavender started crying of relief as she understood her daughter was alive and the rest of us breathed out.

Screenshot-42“We cannot take her to the hospital” mom said quietly when everything had settled a bit.

Lavender held her daughter in her arms and looked at mom with angry eyes, “I have to, or she’ll die!”

“She’s already in transformation. And what would you say? A vampire bit her? They’d lock you up along with me.”

“Transformation?!” Lavender cried again. “My baby, she’ll be a vampire?”

All of the warnings we had gotten throughout our lives ran through my mind. ‘Babies make the best soldiers’. This was exactly what Soda Pop had wanted to do to myself and my brothers but we had been kept safe. All these years, we had been kept safe by grandma and dad. I had so much to thank them for.

Mom walked up to Lavender and Cashmere and put her hand on Cashmere’s forehead. “She’s burning. Her blood, it’s already… It’s too late.” It was the first time I saw mom cry.

Screenshot-4795Cashmere died two days after the bite. It was tragic, but I couldn’t help but to think that it was better it went that way than that she had transformed. I wouldn’t have coped with the thought of killing her, even if she was a vampire.

“Mom, did you know?” I asked when I visited her the day that Cashmere’s heart stopped beating.

“I can never know for sure.”

“But you had seen it? You had seen her die?”

Screenshot-4797“Not really” mom paused for a moment. “I saw her as a vampire, but I didn’t know how it would happen.”

“But then you were wrong, I thought…”

“Like I said, I can never know for sure.”

“But how can we know that we can stop them then? If you can’t know. What if we get bitten too?”

“I’ve seen many futures, honey. Both you and your brother are in all of them. I’ve seen you overcome the vampires in so many different ways. I know you will do it. It’s the only future I’ve ever been completely sure of.”

Screenshot-43“This shit Mars, it’s real. The vampires, they fudging exist and we can stop them.”

Mars shook his head slowly. “Didn’t you see her? We can never beat that.”

“Mom says we can. And she has to be right.” I wasn’t all convinces myself, but I held on the mom’s words as hard as I could because I really wanted to beat them. I wanted to avenge Cashmere and all the other berries who had been harmed by vampires.

Screenshot-45“But mom doesn’t know everything. You know that.” Mars’ voice was breaking. He was scared, but I knew I would convince him to fight with me. I always managed to convince him.

“There has to be a way. Nothing is unbeatable. We just have to figure out how to do it.”

Screenshot-44“We’ll be risking our lives” Mars kept complaining. He was a coward at heart, but I knew I could push him past his boundaries.

“We’ll risk so many more lives if we don’t try” I said and smiled. Mars frowned and sighed, and I knew that he was about to cave in. “We’ll do it together. I know we can do it. This is what we’ve been waiting for our whole lives.”

Screenshot-47Mars was quiet for a moment before he muttered, “It’s what I’ve been dreading my whole life.”

“So you’ll do it?” I was scared to, but more than so, I was excited to finally go on this adventure. I was done waiting, and ready to do this.

Screenshot-46I hugged my brother tight before sitting back to my corner, feeling determined and strong. “So, this is what we’ll do; We’re going to read everything we can find about vampires, mark down every strength and every weakness that has ever been told about them. We’re going to read fiction and non-fiction, watch movies and documentaries, read on those silly supernatural web-forums. We’re going to learn how we can beat them. Some of the stories has to be true, we’re just going to figure out which ones. You’re an amazing student Mars, this is what you will do.” Mars nodded and smiled nervously.

I smiled back at my brother before I continued, “As for myself, I’m going to get strong and fast. I have to be in perfect condition to take them out.”

“You are crazy” Mars said. “But I’m with you. For Cashmere, and everyone else.”

I stood up, filled with excitement and determination, “Let’s  kill them all.”

Chapter 6.1: Friendship

As you probably know, I’ve had some troubles with my computer and my game. I’ve kind of fixed them. At least I can play the Twist sims. However, I lost the saves and therefore the houses, but I’ve done my best to rebuild it. The houses might look slightly different than they’re supposed to, but this will have to do. The bloodline has also been broken since the current family is a reincarnated version. The most important part is that I’m able to keep the story going. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Screenshot-4790I smiled slightly as I sat in the chair in Jazzberry’s familiar shed. My head was feeling light and when I looked at the boys in the room, my heart skipped a beat. They were my best friends and I loved them so much. After trying the elixir for the first time, me and Mars had come back more times than I could count. In fact, being effected by the brew was almost as familiar to me as it was not being it.

Screenshot-4792Mars had complained the first few times we went here, but the more times we imbibed it, the less he argued against doing it. By now, he was just as hooked as myself. As if he could read my thoughts, he sighed content and laid down on the floor with his head on Shamrock’s chest. Shamrock instantly started running his fingers up and down Mars’s arm while humming on some silly tune. It was almost ridiculous how great life was when under the effect of the Fluff-Brew. Perhaps Mars and Shamrock were in love without the brew too, but it sure wasn’t so easy for them to express it.

“We should try one of the other brews some time” Jazzberry said and stood up in his couch, jumping up and down as a little child. I laughed at him. He was the goofiest person I knew and it didn’t make sense that he had become my friend. I tried to stay under the radar most of the time. I wasn’t a freak but I wasn’t exactly popular either. I just was. Perhaps it had to do with dad’s constant warnings about vampires and the threats our family lived under. I knew, of course, that they were real but it wasn’t something I constantly thought about. Sometimes it popped in to my mind that mom somehow thought me and Mars could stop them, and it made me feel excited and scared at the same time. Those vampires had hunted our family for generations, so I couldn’t understand why I or Mars would be special enough to stop them.

Screenshot-4089“Petite, come and look” Jazz pulled at my arm and dragged me towards his cauldron and the huge book he kept next to it. I was oddly fascinated by that book and its contents. The hand-writing was old and it was intriguing to think that generation after generation of Jazz’s family had added things to the book and made changes to the recipes. I was probably just as excited as Jazz about it, and we had fantasized about what changes we would bring to it.

‘Insomniac – when there is no time for sleep’. I read the writing out loud and followed the recipe to its end. Like the Fluff Brew, the whole recipe took up no more than a page of the book. It didn’t seem hard to make. “We should try it” Jazz exclaimed and left the book open and pulled my hand as he went for the door. “We need wolfsbane, and I think I know where I can find it!”

Mars and Shamrock had no intention of going anywhere and I was happy to leave them right there on the floor. The adventure of looking for woldsbane and possibly trying out a new recipe from the book was far more interesting for me, so I followed Jazzberry out the door.

I let Jazz hold my hand as we walked across the island looking for wolfsbane. His hand was warm in mine and the only thing I could think of was how that very same hand had stirred the big cauldron, added ingredients to the brew and overall created this magical thing that we called the Fluff Brew. Perhaps later today, it would make new magic. And I was there, being a part of it.

Screenshot-11“Look!” Jazz let go of my hand and ran towards a bush, lifting some of the leaves up. “Wolfsbane! I knew I would find it around here.”

I walked up next to him and bent down. Under the shrubbery grew small purple flower on green stems. Each stem housed a dozen small flowers, all growing close to the stem. They looked like ordinary flowers. I had never known myself that they were something special or even what their name was. “Wolfsbane” I touched one of the flowers and tasted the word in my mouth. It was really nothing special.

“It’s highly toxic” Jazz said and moved my hand from the flower. “We have to treat it carefully. Mixed correctly and in a high enough dose, this little fella could kill you.”

Instinctivle I took a step back. Jazz didn’t seem to think it was a big deal and while I breathed heavily he delicately picked the flowers and put them in a plastic bag. It was so fascinating to see him work with his alchemy.

“How do you know these things?” I asked when we walked back to his house.

He smiled and shrugged, “I just know”.

Screenshot-5When we got back to his house, Jazzberry’s mother sat outside in a bathrobe. I had been to Jazz’s place many times before, but I had never seen his mother before. She looked so tired and… worn. “There’s no food” she said when we came close enough. “You didn’t get any food, Jazzie.”

Jazzberry shook his head and pulled me past her without saying anything. “You wanna keep me hungry, huh?!” His mother screamed as Jazz closed the door behind us. The look in his eyes changed instantly. The excitement and happiness was all gone and now he looked just sad and tired.

Screenshot-18Mars and Shamrock was making out when we entered the room but pulled apart at the sound of the closing door.

Jazzberry threw the plastic bag with the wolfsbane towards the corner where the cauldron was. The careful way he had handled the flowers earlier was all gone. “We’ll do this some other day” he said. “I think you should leave now”.

I walked closer to him and took his hands, but he pulled away and turned around. “Just leave, please.”

Screenshot-7“What’s wrong with Jazz’s mother you think?” I asked Mars later that evening when we were back home in our secluded island house.

“What do you mean?”

“No clothes on, screaming like that on him… I mean, our parents are actually crazy but they seem more sane than her.”

“Don’t know. It’s probably not easy being her” Mars replied. “Our life hasn’t been exactly easy, but we’ve always had support from our family and there has always been money to somewhat keep us safe. I wonder who we’d been if we hadn’t had all that money. Our family would have been completely different.”

“What does money have to do with it?” I didn’t understand how my twin brother reasoned. Not until after the question had been asked. I had never thought about the state of Jazzberry’s house, but now I suddenly did. I had always took for granted that Jazz’s shed looked as it did because he was eccentric, but it was probably because he couldn’t afford to furnish it any other way. All his furniture were basically made up by old things one could find lay around in dumpsters and around shops’ containers. It was stuff that people threw away. And the bigger house on the lot had the same rusty pink and yellow plate exterior as Jazz’s own shed. It was not a house for rich people. It surprised me that I hadn’t thought of it before.

“They clearly do not have that much money” Mars said, stating what was suddenly so obvious.

Screenshot-8 Screenshot-9Right thereafter Eden came in to the room, ready to go to bed. “Mars, will you read to me?” Eden’s big eyes pleaded and Mars could not resist. Every night, Mars had to read for Eden until he fell asleep, and every night I laid in the top bunk listening to the same story. Only that this night, I fell asleep listening to when Mars read while my thoughts were on Jazzberry and his family. I wanted to help them, somehow.

We all woke up instantly at the sound of dad’s heartpiercing scream. I basically jumped down the bunkbed in the same second as I woke up and ran out to the livingroom. My brothers did exactly the same. In the livingroom we saw dad sitting on the floor, clenching his phone to his chest while screaming and crying out loudly. Eden stopped and just watched and he looked scared. I’m sure I was scared too, but I was the bravest of us three so I walked up to dad and pulled him up. He collapsed in to my arms without trying to keep himself upstraight and I nearly dropped him. Had Mars not come running towards us to help me catch our father, I’m sure we would have fallen to the floor.

Screenshot-20Dad was uncontrollable. He just cried and cried, I had never seen him like that before. It scared me. I wanted to know what had happened, but at the same time, I was too scared to ask.

We placed dad in the sofa, gave him some water and waited for him to calm down enough to be able to speak. Mars kept holding his hand while I tried to comfort Eden. I don’t know how we managed, but eventually dad calmed down. He sniffled and tears kept running from his eyes. “She’s gone” he said. “My mother… Dead”.

It was unreal. Impossible to grasp. Grandmother, dead.

We all cried. Just sat there in the sofa for hours and cried. Looked around at all the photos on the walls that dad had taken of her. She was so beautiful and so kind. A better ‘bow would never live, never walk on this planet.

“She was old” Mars said. It was true, she had lived a long life, experienced many things and the last few years she had been so fragile. It had been time, and yet it was too early.

“She’s with dad now” dad said and showed us a picture of them both.

Screenshot-21“I’d prefer if she was here” I said. I hated it. Hated death, hated that it stole good people from us. Grandmother had devoted her life to protecting her family from the vampires, yet she was taken away before the vampires were gone. It was not fair. I had wanted her to see when we defeated them. And she would never do that. That was the most devastating of it all.

Mars is more thoughtful and trustworthy. He makes sure Petite doesn’t get involved in too much trouble and when she does, he does what he can to get her out safe and he considers himself both a guardian and a guide. In contrast to his sister, Mars does not want to find a solution to the vampire problem simply to eradicate and be known for it, instead Mars is dreaming of a cure.

edenEden Twist

Traits: Couch Potato, Family-Oriented, Party-Animal
Favorites: Pop, Tofu Dog, Violet
Current age:

Eden stays out of his sibling’s way as much as he can. He’d rather be at home and chill while they try to save the world. As far as he’s concerned, it’s not up to him. No one ever asked him to save them. No one ever asked him to do anything. In fact, no one ever seems to notice that he is even there. Eventually, that gets boring and Eden starts doing what he can to be seen. He crashes parties, breaks hearts, lies, mess around with boys and girls in relationships and generally causes a great deal of problems. In fact, he starts doing whatever it takes to be seen while still staying out of his sibling’s quest. It’s not until he finds himself very much involved that he starts to care, and by that time it might already be to late.
